5 anti aging eye creams that soothe and hydrate

5 anti aging eye creams that soothe and hydrate

It happened last year. After months of squinting thanks to losing my spectacles, it all caught up with me. After cleansing my face, I saw a hint of crows feet near my left eye.

That was it, my research into a great anti aging eye cream  began.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, there is no clinical evidence that anti aging eye cream does a better job than regular moisturizers.

But since the weather is changing, I’ve been using richer, yummy scented moisturizers to protect my skin. These moisturizers are too heavy and scented for the thinner skin around the eyes.

I knew I couldn't be the only one hunting for an anti aging eye cream, so here we are.

But first...

A quick note on dark circles

Before we go further, I’d like to discuss dark circles.

If you have dark circles and aren’t sleep deprived, unwell, dehydrated, reacting to a product or having a bad case of allergies, they may be genetic.

Search for clues in your parents and/or siblings’ faces. If they too have dark circles, it may run in the family, and there isn’t much to be done about this skin concern.

Dark circles  may be caused by excessive melanin production or blood pooling under the eyes as a result of inflammation.

According to Futurederm, “to find out what the cause of your dark circles is, do the following test, from Dr. Heidi Waldorf.

"If you apply pressure to the circle or shadow and it disappears, your problem is due to blood pooling under the eyes.

If the color doesn’t disappear, the darkness is caused by excess pigment.

And if the shadow forms at the inside corner of your eye, where a tear would flow, it’s probably due to a deep tear trough.”

Don’t let the marketing fool you, there isn’t an eye product on the market that will fix genetic dark circles.

The best a product can do is brighten and temporarily ‘lift’ the appearance of dark circles.

If you’re uncomfortable, I would suggest a great concealer to cover up dark circles.

What to look for in an anti-aging eye cream

If you don’t have dark circles, I'm assuming the criteria for an ideal eye product is quite simple: an affordable anti aging eye cream, serum or gel that actually works. Depuffing, firming and smoothing like no one’s business.

This means the anti aging eye cream should have ingredients like brightening niacinamide, smoothing silicones, moisturizing hyaluronic and anti inflammatory caffeic acids.

Cue the following anti aging eye creams

Olay Professional Pro-X Eye Restoration Complex. It contains about 4% niacinamide which reduces fine lines and hyperpigmentation.  It also contains peptides, which will help to firm the skin over time.

Alpha Skin Care Nourishing Eye Cream. You know I love a good plant oil, and this eye cream has two! Grape and jojoba. It also has Vitamin C, E and moisturizing sodium hyaluronate.

Cerave Eye Repair Cream has brightening niacinamide, moisturizing ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% +EGCG. Y'all know how much I love The Ordinary products, their price and effectiveness are hard to beat.  This particular gem has moisturizing hyaluronic acid, caffeine which reduces puffiness and the antioxidant EGCG which soothes inflammation.

Boots No.7 Protect and Perfect Intense Eye Cream. This has shea butter up in the ingredient list, which means it  may be great if you want to moisturize, not get rid of fine lines.

In Conclusion

While anti-aging eye creams are not an essential for everyone, I think it doesn’t hurt to try some. Just don’t expect it to get rid of dark circles.

What anti aging eye creams have you tried and loved? Or have you been using your regular anti aging serum ? Or moisturizer? Let us know in the comments!
