5 essentials for an oily skin care routine
I've found that many people find it tricky and frustrating to deal with oily skin for two reasons:
Misleading advice that tells us to wash with black soap, slather on shea butter and leave the skin alone.
Products labelled as “for oily skin” are usually harsh and irritating.
I’m so pressed by this misleading information y’all. So I thought it would be helpful to shed light on the essentials for an oily skin care routine. If you practise the following, you are likely to get great results.
The essentials for an oily skin care routine
After a day of wearing sunscreen, makeup, and running the world, you need to clean your face before bed. Double cleansing is the best way to do that.
The first oil-based cleanser removes sunscreen and makeup while the second water-based cleanser remove sweat and the first cleanser residue.
When your face is clean, any treatments to heal acne will penetrate and work better. Try out the Caroline Hirons + Pixi Double Cleanser and let me know what you think. It’s been a treat for me thus far.
Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)
BHAs are oil soluble exfoliants. This means when applied to skin, BHAs can get inside the clogged pores and reduce the excess oil that bacteria feed on. This will soothe inflammation and reduce pimples.
Here is a list of exfoliants to guide your next purchase.
Well-Formulated Antioxidant Moisturizer
Contrary to popular belief, even oily skin needs to be moisturized to balance oil production. If you don’t moisturize, the skin will produce excess oil to compensate.
Dark spots are usually a concern if you have acne-prone oily skin. A well-formulated antioxidant moisturizer that can deal with the two concerns is perfect for an oily skin care routine coz multi-tasking skincare is bae.
Some of the best brightening ingredients are Vitamin C, alpha arbutin, niacinamide, licorice extract and kojic acid.
Here are some great moisturizers for oily and combination skin.
Sometimes, like at that time of the month, you need to treat just a few spots. This calls for a spot treatment as part of the oily skin care routine. A topical benzoyl peroxide (BP) spot treatment (2.5-10%) will kill acne causing bacteria and dry up the spots.
After the first (oil-based) cleanse, use a cotton bud to gently apply the product only on the pimple, since benzoyl peroxide can irritate the spot-free skin. Leave it on for 5 - 10 minutes before washing it off with the second(water based) cleanser.
After this, apply a BHA toner like COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid or continue with the rest of the oily skin care routine.
I advise washing it off because while BP is effective and cheap, it can bleach your clothes.
Listen. It doesn’t matter where you live or the color of your skin. Skin cancer considers everyone fair game. Broad spectrum sun protection is important to prevent DNA damage, premature aging, uneven skin tone, and in some cases skin cancer.
Antioxidants boost sun protection, so make sure to apply moisturizer underneath the sunscreen. Applying moisturizer with sunscreen as one of its ingredients is not enough SPF. You need to apply sunscreen on top of that.
On the other hand, some sunscreens are wonderfully moisturizing and you don’t need to apply moisturizer underneath it. Like the Shiseido Senka SPF 50, which is suitable for normal to dry skin.
La Roche Posay Fluid SPF 60 works great for if you are dark, and are creating an oily skin care routine. It dries with a matte finish and leaves no white film.
