Hi.

Welcome to Skincerely Clare! A skincare blog for the African millennial who wants to clear acne and dark spots.

A guide to double cleansing

A guide to double cleansing

Once upon a time, I faithfully washed my face with water and soap and wondered why I always had dry skin and clogged pores. Then I got woke. Double cleansing woke.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is basically cleaning the skin in two steps.

The first step is to use an oil based cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, dead cells, dirt, sebum etc.

The second step is to clean the skin with a water based, low pH gentle cleanser.

Think of it like clearing the dinner table.

The first step after eating dinner is to remove the dirty dishes, spills, crumbs etc. That's your makeup, sunscreen, sebum etc

The next step, you get a clean damp SWIPE, all purpose cleaner and go in! No dirt can escape this second table wipe. Same story with the face, the second cleanse is about actually cleaning the skin.

That's double cleansing.

The first step of a double cleanse is removal, the next is cleaning.

Why add double cleansing to your skincare routine?

Cleansing properly is very important. If the skin isn't cleaned well, then it could have concerns like:

  • Dryness
  • Dullness
  • Sensitivity
  • Inflammation
  • Clogged pores
  • Blackheads
  • Acne
  • Excess oil

How to add double cleansing to your routine

  1. Make it a part of the evening skincare routine. Since there is no makeup or sunscreen to remove in the morning, double cleanse in the evenings.
  2. Use an oil based cleanser to remove oil based products like makeup and sunscreen. Oil dissolves oil, so using a water based cleanser to remove sunscreen issa joke.
  3. Use a low pH gentle cleanser as a second cleanser. Our skin is healthy at a slightly acidice pH of 4.5-5.5 to protect from moisture loss and microbial growth. But if we use high pH cleansers, this protection is stripped away. The result is dry, inflamed, sensitive skin.
