Across Africa, winter is coming. I can’t be the only one who is excited. Not in the least because of switching up skin care routines.

My winter morning skin care routine is all about protection while the evening skin care routine focuses on repair and starting this year, anti aging.

During winter, many of us have skin that is dull, dry, dehydrated and needs nourishment. Well, we don’t have to deal with that because of Natural Moisturizing Factor. NMF in short.

What is Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF)?

The definition from Paula Begoun states that “NMF are ingredients that mimic the structure and function of healthy skin.”  Healthy skin has an ideal Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) which is produced by skin cells.

NMF are found in the epidermis, the topmost layer of skin, which acts as a barrier. It prevents moisture loss and microbial contamination. This means NMF plays an important role in skin hydration.

According to the Beauty Brains, a healthy level of NMF is important especially if you have dry skin – “...NMF is your best defense against dryness, because it’s able to absorb moisture from the atmosphere and bind it to your skin. If you suffer from dry, flaky skin, inflammation or eczema, NMF might be your new best friend...”

Common Components of NMF

NMF is the skin’s self moisturizing gift from the Creator. But, if you have dry or sensitive skin, then you need an ideal NMF content to assist the epidermis in hydration.

Common components of NMF are: Amino acids, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, cholesterol, fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids, glycosphingolipids, urea, linoleic acid, glycosaminoglycans, glycerin, mucopolysaccharide and sodium PCA (pyrrolidone carboxylic acid).

Benefits of Using a Moisturizer with NMF

Using moisturizers  with the above ingredients helps to heal, repair and protect your skin. Simply put, NMF helps to keep your skin healthy. A healthy skin can deal better with hormones, irritation, stress or pollution.

Adding oils to the moisturizer with NMF will further assist to hydrate and smooth the skin. Add oils like these to your moisturizer: apricot oil, beeswax, canola oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, corn oil, jojoba oil, jojoba wax, lanolin, lecithin, olive oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, shea butter, soybean oil, squalane and sweet almond oil.
