Hi.

Welcome to Skincerely Clare! A skincare blog for the African millennial who wants to clear acne and dark spots.

You need to know about alpha arbutin

You need to know about alpha arbutin

Let's talk about one of my current faves, alpha arbutin.

PIH or Post Inflammatory  Hyper-pigmentation is a major concern for me and several others with dark skin. It's a result of the skin darkening because of an injury like acne or sun damage.

It takes ages to disappear and can be difficult to treat. Thankfully, alpha arbutin can help.

How?

When the skin is injured, excess melanin is produced. The enzyme tyrosinase is responsible for melanin production.

If you want to get rid of PIH, you need something that will inhibit tyrosinase. Alpha arbutin does that.

What exactly is alpha arbutin?

Arbutin is originally obtained from the bearberry plant.

It’s a safer alternative to hydroquinone because it doesn't kill melanocytes - the melanin producing cells.

There are different types of arbutin: arbutin, alpha arbutin and beta arbutin. Of the three, alpha arbutin is the most effective.

What are the benefits of alpha arbutin?

At concentrations of up to 2%, alpha arbutin reduces the look of dark spots and uneven tone.

There's a lot of skincare with alpha arbutin. I'm on a brightening mission and for the past 2 months, I've been using The Ordinary 2% Alpha Arbutin + HA.

It's a fragrance-free concentrated serum with purified alpha arbutin and hyaluronic acid. I use 3 drops in the evening after cleansing + toning and before a Vitamin C moisturizer.

It’s gel-like, easily spreads and quickly absorbs after a few seconds.

This is the first alpha arbutin product I've ever used and I love it. My dark spots are definitely reducing.

Wanna try it? If you're in Kenya, here's how you can get The Ordinary in the country.

Have you tried alpha arbutin before? Let me know in the comments!
