7 reasons why beauty sleep is real
Why do we romanticize #TeamNoSleep?
Sleep is extremely important. Just ask yourself. What are the most chill, side-eye giving animals you know? I'll tell you.
Cats. And they are some of the best sleepers we know. Is it a coincidence?
No fam, its not.
Adults generally need 7-9 hours of sleep. When you are well rested, you can focus, quickly make decisions and are a pleasure to be around.
If you used a great sheet mask the night before, your skin is probably looking good too. #Winning
But how is beauty sleep real?
1. Sleep restores, heals and renews the skin
A sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and repeats itself through the night. While you sleep, skin cell regeneration almost doubles, restoring tissues.
Endorphins (pleasure enhancing hormones) are released in high levels to heal inflammation, improve skin elasticity and smooth wrinkles.
2. Sleep helps beneficial cosmetic ingredients penetrate the skin
As you sleep, body temperature increases. This helps beneficial ingredients in your products to be easily absorbed. Use restoring PM skin care like antioxidant serums, masks, moisturizers and facial oils.
3. Sleep gets rid of bags under your eyes
Sometimes, dark circles are genetic and can't be helped. This isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the ones caused by sleep deprivation.
When you're sleep deprived, the body is tired so the stress hormone cortisol is increased to give you the energy to stay awake. Cortisol increases blood pressure, causing blood vessels to dilate.
The skin around the eyes is very thin, so when the blood vessels dilate, it's clearly seen here. There are quick DIYs for this e.g. chilled spoons, cucumber slices, green tea bags, ice cubes, concealer etc. But the ultimate solution is to sleep regularly and get those cortisol levels down.
4. Sleep reduces skin stress
Our skin deals with external factors like pollution, dirt, pollen, UV damage, harsh products etc every day. Issa lot.
We can help by managing internal factors like stress to keep it healthy. Stress increases cortisol production.
Increased cortisol production will slow down skin cells, causing them to take longer to reach the surface and flake off. These dead skin cells build up, making your face look dull, flaky, patchy and lifeless.
5. Sleep helps you age well
As you sleep or exercise, HGH or the growth hormone is released. HGH affects just about every cell in the body including collagen and elastin.
Collagen and elastin keep the skin flexible, plump and firm. The loss of collagen and elastin results in sagging skin.
When you're constantly #TeamNoSleep, prolonged cortisol production leads to the loss of collagen and elastin.
6. Sleep helps manage your weight + whiteheads
Sleep regulates the levels of the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which play a role in our feelings of hunger and fullness. When we are sleep deprived, we may feel the need to eat more.
And let's be honest, when was the last time you had a healthy midnight fridge raid? In my experience, never.
When you wake up in the morning, you may even have whiteheads after that greasy late night snack. Nothing a proper cleansing can't deal with, but still.
7. Sleep helps the body get rid of toxins
Consider how you feel after thoroughly cleaning the house. Exhausted! Or is that just me?
Cleaning takes a lot of energy! Your brain thinks so too, so it gets rid of toxins while the rest of the body is at rest.
During sleep, brain cells shrink, cerebrospinal fluid increases and circulates throughout the brain tissue, removing uchafu - waste. The waste collected is carried by the bloodstream into the liver for detoxification.
One of the waste products removed from the brain during sleep is beta amyloid which forms sticky plaques associated with brain diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Get some sleep guys. It's good for you. Beauty sleep is real. I clock 6.5 - 7.5 hours a night to function like a normal human being. What about you? How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
Let me know in the comments!
The sheet masks featured aren't locally available, what a shame. Get them through an online shopping service like Mall for Africa. Because these sheet masks are AH. MAZ. ING.
