how to choose a daily facial moisturizer

When it comes to meals, I rarely bother with starters and dessert. I wasn't raised eating starters and dessert, so it's not a big deal for me. Just give me a delicious main course and all is well.

I'm the same way with skincare. I spend most of the skincare budget on the "middle stuff" like serums, acids and toners. Not cleanser (starter) or (dessert) moisturizer.

Despite this, I do have some expectations for the moisturizer. The least it can do is be and feel good on the skin.

I'm currently into light textures like gel creams because #mombasanijoto. So the Simple Vital Vitamin night cream I picked at Super Cosmetics is perfect to use during the day.

In regard to formulation, there are a couple of ingredients to look for in a daily moisturizer.

Ingredients to look for in a daily facial moisturizer

  • Antioxidants like coenzyme q10, retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide to help with aging well.
  • Humectants like glycerin, hyaluronic acid to attract water and soften the skin.
  • Occlusives and emollients like plant oils to seal in the moisture from humectants and smooth the skin.
  • Preservatives to prevent the growth of harmful (icky) bacteria, fungi, viruses etc. Seriously,  guys side-eye all "preservative-free" skincare, especially moisturizers with water as an ingredient. Water is essential to microbial contamination, so if a product has water or will come in contact with water ( like damp fingers) then preservatives are important. Would you eat a plate of food that has been on the kitchen counter for weeks? Exactly. So why are you serving that up to your face? Abeg!

If you have oily or combination skin...

You need a light weight daily facial moisturizer. Preferably a gel, lotion or liquid formulation that won't leave your skin greasy.

Available in Nakumatt

Try the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. I know I constantly mention this, but guys, it works and can be found kila pahali (eeeeverywhere).

It also has hyaluronic acid, the hydrating star in skincare.

If you have dry skin...

You may need a daily facial moisturizer that is a cream, milk, balm or lotion. Something to smooth the skin and prevent flakes.

Available in Super Cosmetics

Try the Olay Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream. Aside from anti aging niacinamide, which Olay is known for, this cream has glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, peptides, dimethicone, aloe and panthenol. Hello moisture!

If you have sensitive skin...

Skin can be sensitive for a number of reasons. Dehydration, exfoliation, sun damage etc. I would suggest a fragrance free moisturizer that has skin restoring ingredients like cholesterol and ceramides.

Available at Good Life Pharmacy

Try the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5.  The Cicaplast range is for sensitive skin, and this has got to be one of the best moisturizers I used to soothe eczema flare-ups. It has healing madecassoside and moisturizing panthenol which will strengthen the moisture barrier.

There is a hand cream version too. It's also available at Good Life Pharmacy.

Keep in mind...

Your skin type when you go searching for a daily facial moisturizer.

If a moisturizer is too rich, you can get whiteheads. If it's too thin, the skin will be dry.

In conclusion

Choosing a daily facial moisturizer comes down to your skin type, needs and the types of formulas you prefer.
