16 brightening serums under US$25 that get rid of dark spots
I have found that getting rid of dark spots takes a lot of patience, SPF, exfoliation and brightening skincare.
I love a good brightening serum to get rid of dark spots. If it has ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide, licorice root extract, alpha arbutin or kojic acid, chances are I'm willing to try it.
But finding great brightening serums in Kenya is next to impossible. You will need to purchase online, which can get expensive fast. Because: shipping and handling.
Here are some great brightening serums under US$25 to help you get rid of dark spots and stay in budget.
Except The Ordinary serums, (which you can learn how to ship into Kenya here), all the serums are on Amazon. Any third party service like Mall for Africa can easily get them to you!
Brightening Vitamin C serums
This caught my eye when I was scrolling through Reddit. If you have normal to oily or combination skin try Rohto Melano CC Intensive Anti Spot Essence
If you have normal to dry skin, give Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C + Ferulic Acid Serum a shot. Some say it's a dupe for the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic serum. Fiddy has a detailed review here.
Brightening niacinamide serums
Problematic name aside (White Power? Abeg). The CosRx Galactomyces 95 White Power Essence is a great way to hydrate and glow for all skin types. #fiddymademedoit...Again, so here is her detailed review.
It's rare for me not to mention niacinamide and Olay in the same sentence. The Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum is ideal for all skin types.
The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide + Zinc. Gosh this stuff runs out faaassstt on ASOS! It's one of my favourite products because it gets rid of my hormonal pimples overnight. It's ideal for blemish prone skin.
Brightening licorice root extract serums
I've heard great things about the It's Skin Power 10 Formula Li Effector especially if you're acne prone. It might be part of my next Jolse haul.
Okay so the Scinic Honey All in One Ampoule is 90% honey extract and 10% other ingredients, which licorice extract is a part of. Still moisturizing and brightening for all skin types though! Read Holy Snails review here.
Brightening alpha arbutin serums
You've got to hand it to Japanese brand Hada Labo for creating great affordable skincare, just like the Hadalabo Shirojyun Arbutin Lotion that works for all skin types. Honestly, Hada Labo needs to set up shop in Kenya. Read a detailed review by Holy Snails here.
My current favorite The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA
Brightening kojic acid serums
Trust Palmer's to come up with a dependable product like the Palmer's Skin Success Dark Spot Corrector Fade Serum
Makeup Artist's Choice Fade Serum. So this isn't on Amazon either but OMG there's so much brightening power in this serum! Kojic acid, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, mulberry extract, licorice root extract. Goodness, I need it in my life.
Brightening azelaic acid serums
- The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension is creamy, not serum-y. It soothes, brightens and reduces acne.
While hydroquinone is considered one of the best ways to deal with skin discoloration, I haven't included it on the list due to its controversy - it's banned in some countries.
Used at maximum concentrations of 2% (Over-The-Counter) and 4%(prescribed) for short periods of time (usually 4 months), hydroquinone is considered safe for most people.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, dangerous amounts of hydroquinone (above 4%) are being sold and used by individuals, with terrible results (bleaching), especially if you have a dark skin tone.
If you’re on a mission to reduce dark spots and even skin tone, try any of these serums and don't forget to slather on sunscreen.
Sun damage will cause even more dark spots and uneven tone rendering your great brightening serum worthless!
Have you tried any brightening serum before? Which one? Let me know in the comments. I'm currently loving The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA.
