Brightening serums for dark spots

That Dettol Even Tone ad irks me. It's misleading. I mean really, a scrubby soap is meant to do what exactly? No amount of bar soap will get rid of dark spots and uneven skin tone.

You know what will? A skincare routine with AHAs, sunscreen and brightening skincare to clear hyperpigmentation.

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a condition where some parts of the skin are darker than others. It's a leading skin care concern among African women.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by excess melanin production. Melanin is our skin's natural defence. When the skin is injured, excess melanin is produced to protect it.

For an even skin tone, add AHAs, SPF and Vitamin C to your skincare routine.

Some causes of hyperpigmentation

Sun exposure

When parts of the skin  are constantly exposed to  harmful UV radiation, melanin will increase in these parts to protect them from sun damage.

Skin inflammation and injury

Skin can be hurt by stuff like acne, eczema, shaving, bruising etc. When the skin is injured, more melanin is produced to protect the injured areas, making them darker. This is called Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, PIH in short.

Sun exposure can make PIH darker, so wearing sunscreen will help avoid this.

Hormonal changes

Some medications or pregnancy bring changes in hormones. This can result in a well known type of hyperpigmentation - melasma, also known as 'the mask of pregnancy'

Types of Hyperpigmentation

  1. Epidermal Hyperpigmentation which is in the epidermis - the outer layer of the skin. PIH is an example. It can be treated with brightening skincare, microdermabrasion, chemical peels etc
  2. Dermal Hyperpigmentation which is in the dermis - the middle layer of the skin. It is extremely difficult to treat, usually only certain lasers can be used.

How to treat epidermal hyperpigmentation

A suitable routine has exfoliating AHAs, sunscreen and brightening skincare. Brightening ingredients to look for in your serums include:

  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide
  • Licorice
  • Kojic acid
  • Arbutin
  • Mulberry Extract
  • Bearberry Extract

Brightening serums for dark spots

  • Clarins Bright Plus Tri Intensive Serum

Available in Lintons Beauty

Y'all know I have a soft spot for Clarins. Hydraquench gel (now Hydra Essentiel) was the first product to heal the dehydration I had.

The Bright Plus range is one of the best selling skincare in Africa. The products have Vitamin C.

Available in Super Cosmetics

If it's Olay, then it's likely to have niacinamide. Niacinamide is great for an even tone, firming skin and soothing inflammation like acne.

  • Mentholatum Acnes Vitamin C serum

Available in Super Cosmetics, Good Life Pharmacy and Jumia Kenya

  • Radha Beauty Vitamin C Serum

Available in Naturale Skincare on Facebook

  • L'Oréal Paris Skin Perfection Serum

Available on Jumia Kenya

In Conclusion

Dettol even tone isn't the solution for uneven skin tone.
