Kudu Cosmetica Bio-Active Hydration Serum

The Kudu Bio-Active Hydration Serum is the last product I received in the skin care package from African beauty brand - Kudu Cosmetica.

As far as I'm concerned, every one needs a great serum. Serums are the real workhorses of any skincare routine. They are usually laden with beneficial  ingredients to address specific issues like brightening, acne, hydration etc. If you want to spend wisely on any category of skincare, it would probably be on a serum.

Of recent, the weather is cooler in Kampala, so I have been using the Kudu Cosmetica Bio-Active Serum as a daily dry skin moisturizer.

Simmondsia chinesis (jojoba seed oil), Squalane (olive derived), Caprylic Capric triglyceride (from coconut oil and glycerine), Sclerocarya birrea (marula) seed oil, Adsonia digitate (baobab) oil, Moringa oleiferea (moringa) oil, Rosa canina (rosehip) seed oil, Schinziophyton rautanenii (manketti) kernel oil, Ximenia Americana (ximenia) seed oil, Vitis vinifera (Grape) seed oil, Aloe ferox (Cape Aloe) leaf extract, Glycine soja (soybean oil), Calendula officinalis (calendula) flower extract, Prunus dulcis (almond) oil, Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola) extract, Oentera biennis (Evening primrose) oil, Nigella sativa (black cumin) seed oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

Ingredient yays

18 out of the 20 ingredients work well for normal to dry and sensitive skin types, except the two I mention below.

Ingredient nays

Caprylic Capric Trigylceride. If you have issues with coconut oil, this may not work for you.

Vitamin E. In some people, Vitamin E clogs pores.

If you are like me and have no issues with any of the ingredients on the list, YAY!

Instantly makes skin look more radiant, smooth and plumped

Yes it does. Plant oils are emollient - they fill the gaps between cells to give the skin a smooth feel. This serum has 14 powerful plant oils, a dream to get rid of rough, flaky skin.

Blend of non fragrant, antioxidant rich plant oils and botanical extracts to hydrate and replenish skin

This serum has great African seed oils like moringa, marula, baobab, ximenia etc. These oils have been proven to be rich in antioxidants, which protect the skin against premature aging, environmental pollution etc.

The serum also has Cape Aloe which is known for its hydrating properies. I didn’t find it that hydrating though. The amount of oils versus aloe, made the serum more moisturizing than hydrating.

Helps repair skin’s barrier, soothe and reduce redness and Strengthen and nurture damaged skin and scar tissue.

If you ever over-exfoliate like I did on a random Tuesday when I was too sleepy to pay attention, this is a great oil to help with healing. The Kudu Bio-Active Hydration serum has squalane and jojoba oils which heal the skin barrier. It also has calendula and centella asiatica, that calm the skin to reduce inflammation.

Locks in moisture

Make sure to apply a hydrating product before this oil to lock in the moisture, especially if your skin is dry or dehydrated. If you don't have a hydrating product, pat in the water after cleansing your face before applying the oil.

Absorb easily, non drying

This is a perfect light oil, it absorbs well, leaves a subtle glow without a greasy feel. It’s perfect for the day.

Application and Feel

The oil is golden in color.

It has a light texture and would work well alone or mixed into a creamy moisturizer or lotion. It has no added fragrance, and smells like pure plant oils – earthy, which I find comforting. Actually, at some point, I couldn't smell it anymore. My system is used to it!

I use this serum in the AM and PM in the following ways:

1.        After cleansing, I pat the water from the rinse into my face. When the water is 90% absorbed on my face, I apply the serum.

2.       After cleansing, I pat dry with a clean paper towel, apply a hydrating toner and pat that in. When the toner sinks, I apply the Kudu serum.

You get the gist. Before the Kudu Bio-Active Hydration Serum, I apply a hydrating product which the oil would seal in. That way, my face is properly hydrated and moisturized.

On Retin-A nights, I use method 1 and apply the Retin-A as a final step on top of the serum. This way, the Retin A has an extra step to go through before reaching my skin and is less irritating.

A little Kudu serum goes a long way. One pump is enough for my face. Another pump is enough for the neck and chest. I have managed to stretch the serum almost 3 months!

The Kudu Bio-Active Hydration Serum comes in a dark brown 30 ML glass bottle with a pump. I love this for 4 reasons!

  1. The pump means I don’t need to open the bottle and let microbes in.
  2. The dark bottle reduces the amount of light that would enter the product and deteriorate it.
  3. The glass is not travel friendly, but it is environmentally friendly, which I find more important.
  4. Design-wise, I’m a sucker for clean, minimalist design. I love Kudu’s aesthetics!

Who would benefit from this

  • Anyone without issues with coconut oil, Vitamin E or any of the other ingredients.
  • Anyone in need of a light facial oil to heal or maintain dry, dehydrated, eczema, overexfoliated or sensitive skin.

Would I repurchase?

This was gifted to me last year. But yes, I will be making a purchase when I run out. #SkincerelySupportsAfricanBrands
