3 moisturizers for sensitive skin in Kenya

Sensitive skin can be caused by a lot e.g. chlorine, hot showers, sun exposure, overexfoliation, harsh soap, medication etc.

When the skin is sensitive, its protective barrier has been compromised. It can't properly keep the good stuff, like moisture in, and the bad stuff, like bacteria, out.

If there is anything eczema and over exfoliation taught me, it's how painful sensitive skin can be. So how do you deal?

Well, step one is to figure out the cause. Put your Sherlock Holmes hat on and analyse your routine. Don't take someone else's word for it (unless they are a dermatologist, obvs). Y'all know there's a lot of pseudoscience on these internet streets.

If the cause is your skincare, look at the ingredients. Head to the ingredient analysis site CosDNA to search for the potential irritants in your skincare.

Common skincare irritants include alcohol, parfum/fragrance (essential oils and synthetic), artificial color, sodium lauryl sulfate, phenoxyethanol etc.

Don't be hasty. If you see these ingredients in products you use, don't immediately throw them out. Patch test to find the problem ingredient(s).  Or if you ain't gat time like I did on that day a Garnier cream nearly made me lose my mind, just stop using it or give it away.

A great start to healing the skin would be using gentle, fragrance free skincare to soothe inflammation and protect the skin from further irritation.

This could be skincare with common anti inflammatory ingredients like aloe vera, allantoin, honey, green tea extract, oat extract or soy extract.

Below are some brands you can turn to that have soothing moisturizers for sensitive skin in Kenya.

Moisturizers for sensitive skin in Kenya

Available in Nakumatt and various pharmacies

Aveeno is well known for using oat extract in their skincare. Oats are great for soothing itchy, dry, irritated skin like that with eczema.

The Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion also has dimethicone. Dimethicone is an emollient. Emollients smooth the surface of skin. Excellent if the skin is dry and flaky.

Available in pharmacies

Avene is a French brand famous its product - Avene Thermal Spring Water. It's said to "...have been relieving skin conditions for more than two and a half centuries ..."

I don't know much about that. What I do know is that Avene Skin Recovery Cream is one of the first products I tried that properly addressed the sensitive skin I had.

It has glycerin, a humectant that attracts water to the top layer of the skin. Squalane, a emollient naturally found in skin. And mineral oil, an occlusive which seals moisture in skin to help it heal.

La Roche-Posay

Available in Good Life Pharmacy

La Roche-Posay is another French brand that likes its thermal spring water. I'm sensing a pattern. The French love water y'all, micellar water is French too!

The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Fluid is formulated with emollient squalane and humectant glycerin.

In conclusion

Skincare is very personal and you should always proceed with caution.

Read labels, patch test and learn the ingredients that your skin reacts to. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.
